The Sound of The Northside
A collaboration between The Kabin Crew, One Two One Two and Irish National Opera
We directed and co-created a hip-hop opera this summer with the amazing Kabin Crew, a hip hop collective from Knocknaheeny, Cork.
Irish National Opera brought us in to design a series of workshops for the Kabin, a youth group with young people ranging from 7-18 yrs old.
We travelled to Cork over 3 months, and through workshops and conversations we got to know the Kabin and their tutors and learned what they are all about. Community, empowerment, love and hard work is what we saw. This metal box in the middle of Knocknaheeny is a creative powerhouse. The Kabin write, record, and perform original material with the amazing support of Garry McCarthy, and the incredible tutors, Caoimhe, Swan, Jackie, Sean, Alex, Rory, Bony, and all the brilliant parents and extended family. It has been an unbelievable privilege to be invited into the Kabin family and we are excited to continue this collaboration into the future, whatever shape that may take. Here’s some photographs of the amazing night we had in front of a sold-out Everyman Theatre. The Kabin and the Irish National Opera blew the roof off the place.
